What is Poetry?


Poetry is defined as a form of literary art written by a poet in verse or in meter as an expression of his emotions by using the various figures of speech like similes and onomatopoeia, similes and metaphors. Poetry can be distinguished from prose through the use of various techniques like meter, rhyme and repetition and the emphasis on the beauty of language. The prose is defined as an ordinary writing or speech written with out any metrical structure while poems usually use imagery and association of words to convey emotions quickly.

Poetry written in European language and in English usually uses different rhyme schemes. These techniques can be seen usually in children’s poems like Nursery rhymes that’s why these poems are very easy to remember. A limerick is one example of the various types of poetry that uses rhyme. The other techniques used by poets to employ sound in the various types of poetry are the Alliteration, Assonance, Consonance and Euphony.

Primarily, poetry is governed by several forms of idiosyncratic and conventions which suggests differential interpretation to words or sometimes to evoke emotive responses. In order to achieve incantatory or musical effects various devices were used such as alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia and rhythm.

Poetry Structure


The structure of poetry varies according to the types of poetry. But the structural elements always include the couplet, line, strophe and stanza.In order to create a expressive and imaginative work, poets mixed the use of language and a specific structure. Generally, the structures used by poets in some types of poetry were also use when the visual effect of a finished poem was being considered. As a result of the different structures of various poetry types, a group of lines on the page that enhance the poem’s composition were formed.

Types of Poetry

Overall, there are a lot of poetry types and poems found today. From the lesser known types poetry which include Senryu, Enjambment, Idyll and Doggerel to the main types of poetry and poems like Ballad, sonnet, Rhymes and Limericks.

There are about 55 types of poetry that men have been using over the years. These are  ABC, Acrostic, Ballad, Ballade, Blank verse, Bio, Burlesque, Canzone, Carpe diem, Cinquain, Classicism, Concrete, Couplet, Dramatic monologue, Elegy, Epic, Epigram, Epitaph, Epithalamium (Epithalamion), Free verse (vers libre), Found, Ghazal, Haiku, Horatian ode, Iambic pentameter, Idyll (Idyl), Irregular (Pseudo-Pindaric or Cowleyan) ode, Italian sonnet, Lay, Limerick, List, Lyric, Memoriam stanza, Name, Narrative, Ode, Pastoral, Petrarchan, Pindaric ode, Quatrain, Rhyme, Rhyme royal, Romanticism, Rondeau, Senryu, Sestina, Shakespearean, Shape, Sonnet, Sound, Tanka, Terza Rima, Verse, Villanelle, and Visual to name a few.
